Kurt Vonnegut’s advice to young writers

Posted by Tom Fasano on August 7, 2010 – 11:49 am

This is the first part a lecture Kurt Vonnegut delivered at Albion College called “How To Get A Job Like Mine.” Vonnegut was forever giving lectures with litltes like “How to Get a Job Like Mine,” and then he would talk about whatever he wanted. I bet you did not know that Vonnegut’s daughter, Edith, was divorced from Geraldo Rivera in 1974. I did not.

“Don’t use semicolons. They stand for absolutely nothing. They are transvestite hermaphrodites. They are just a way of showing off. To show that you have been to college.”

San Francisco Fights Graffiti with Murals

Posted by Tom Fasano on August 4, 2010 – 8:22 pm

The city of San Francisco’s StreetSmARTS program is one step ahead of the taggers by commissioning local artists to paint murals in graffiti-prone areas. Buildings and alleyways now serve as art galleries in full view of the public, exactly where art needs to be to thrive. The Wall Street Journal’s Nick Burns reports.

“Inherent Vice” Trailer Narrated by Pynchon

Posted by Tom Fasano on August 6, 2009 – 9:34 pm

Is it possible that Thomas Pynchon has finally come out of seclusion? Penguin has just released this video trailer for Inherent Vice, Pynchon’s latest novel, and there is much speculation about the voice of the narrator. Could it be Pynchon who provided the voiceover? Penguin isn’t saying. Pynchon did poke fun at himself with a cameo in The Simpsons, and the two voices do sound similar to me. Watch The Simpsons video clip and decide for yourself.

Young Goodman Brown

Posted by Tom Fasano on September 4, 2008 – 10:07 pm

I found the above video on a blog called protozoic, a very strange and clever place indeed.

Click here for a handout we’re going to use when reading Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The following audio is an unabridged reading of the story. We will begin reading this story tomorrow and my hope is to use the audio as support.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
